Welcome to a little version of Flashback Friday on the blog today! With it being that time of year and seeing so many posts making me reminiscent of past events and great times, I decided to share when I went to Oktoberfest here in Germany. To do that we have to go back to 2009 and we also don;t travel to Munich. What??? Yep. I have never been to the Oktoberfest in Munich, but I did have the opportunity to go to a local celebration with some great friends.
Some of the bigger cities and/or small towns I noticed have their own local Oktoberfest celebrations. Back in 2009, my friend Cruz came from the states to visit me and since Munich wasn’t really an option, we thought we might as well check it out. We went to the town of Wittlich which is located in the Rheinland-Pfalz state and has a population of about 64,000 according to Wikipedia. This town has some decent shopping and I used to frequent quite often. (We still do now as a close friend of ours lives there). So my friend Cruz and my friend Nicole who also lived in Germany at the time, headed off to check out what a local Oktoberfest was like. Here a few pictures from our night…..
All in all it was a really great time. I’m not a big crowd person, so for me, it was just right. There were enough people to make it fun and not too many to make it not-so-fun for me. The majority of the photos were taken by my friend Cruz, who is an excellent photographer. (You can see more of his work here.) Of course, the ones with all three of us must have been taken by a random fellow beer drinker.
Hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane! It’s only 8am and this little trip has made me reminiscent of good times with a craving for a big, cold, beer! Prost!
Looks like fun! Karlsruhe had its very own Oktoberfest for the first time this year, but I didn’t go. I have been to the real thing though, and to Stuttgart for Canstatter Wasen.
I would like to go to Stuttgart also. So many things I want to do! Glad we are here for good so I have time!
Canstatter Wasen is always fun
We’re actually coming to your neck of the woods tomorrow (you’re close to Trier, right?). I would have suggested meeting up, but I’m also meeting a friend who is coming over from Luxembourg and it might be a bit of a rush to fit it all in.
Yes. I’m right outside of Trier. That would’ve been lovely but no worries. What are you doing in my neck of the woods?

I’ve been meaning to meet up with my friend there for a while, and I recently found out about the elephant parade: http://www.elephantparade.com/index.php/cities/trier-luxembourg/ so we now need to go before 18 October so I can see the elephants
Oh yes! I’ve seen them and love them! I was going to blog about it but a few others beat me to it.
I haven’t gone to Munich this year for Oktoberfest (and I can’t this weekend :() which has made me a little sad but to be honest I always thought it looked more fun in the smaller towns/cities that celebrated it. I’m considering going to Frankfurt’s one this weekend just to experience the giant beer jugs though
It was a really great time. I enjoyed the smaller crowd for sure!
I love the pictures! I CANNOT get over the SIZE of those beers! I think one would have me doing the conga, and two would have me yodeling into a Bratwurst microphone and doing a Bavarian twist all alone on a table!
Haha! It was good beer too! I think I had two but I’m not sure.
Looks like fun!! Never been to an Oktoberfest… Maybe one day, I’m not that far from Germany
You definitely should! It’s a great time! Germans know how to party!
That looks like fun! We have yet to go to Oktoberfest and according to my wife we never will hahaha since it is just craziness, drunken people and loud Schlager music but your photos look like a blast! I am not a big drinker so I think one of those big beers would last me all night
That is so funny what you said about your wife saying you never will. My husband says the same thing! I have a fellow expat blogger in Bavaria that I’m making tentative plans with to go next year. Maybe you should join us! I told my husband I just want to experience it once.

That would definitely be an experience haha, can you imagine us expats down there just staring at the drunken madness
Great pics, loved that you did the conga! We should get a little group together for next year’s Oktoberfest. Currently lounging off the hangover from yesterday in Munich and I have to say it was well worth it!
Wow I’m impressed. I couldn’t imagine a hangover and a toddler. I’d curl up and cry. yes I think we should! It could be fun!
I am lucky that the little one is with my mother-in-law until a few hours time!
Fun!! I like the smaller celebrations too - they can be so much less overwhelming than the huge crowds, plus the line for the ladies’ is much shorter!! Fun memories!
No kidding! Why does it take women so long to use the bathroom?! This is on my list of questions about life.
